Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed concern over recent developments in the country, describing them as a worrisome trend that undermines Nigeria’s democracy.
Atiku, in a statement on Friday, condemned the police invitation of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, the reported attack on the convoy of former Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, as well as other incidents which he said reflect a dangerous slide towards authoritarianism.
He warned that these actions are not isolated occurrences but part of a broader pattern aimed at intimidating dissenting voices and weakening democratic freedoms. According to him, criminalising opposition leaders and reform advocates threatens the foundations of Nigeria’s democracy and risks plunging the country into authoritarian rule.
“The invitation of El-Rufai by the police, the violent attack on Malami’s convoy, and the disruption of reformist gatherings are deeply troubling signs of intolerance and political repression,” Atiku said.
The former Vice President stressed that democracy thrives on dialogue, tolerance, and respect for the rule of law, not suppression. He urged political leaders to resist the temptation of using state institutions to target opponents or silence critics.
Atiku further maintained that safeguarding democracy is a responsibility shared by all Nigerians, not just the opposition. He called on citizens, civil society, and democratic institutions to stand firm in protecting the principles of liberty, justice, and fair participation in governance.
“Nigeria belongs to all of us. It must never be reduced to a playground for partisan desperation. The rule of law, justice, and liberty must remain our guiding principles,” he added.
