The Community for Sexual Abuse Prevention, Advocacy and Response (SPAR Community), in partnership with the Jaytee Fayemi Foundation, has organized a seminar on sexual abuse and a menstrual education programme for women and girls displaced by the Yelewata massacre in Benue State.
The event took place on Saturday at the International Market IDP Camp in Makurdi. It reached over 1,500 women and girls, teaching them about sexual violence prevention, rights awareness, and menstrual health.
The organizers explained that the programme is part of SPAR Community’s ongoing efforts to support vulnerable groups with sex education and practical knowledge that can help protect them from abuse.
They also noted that the seminar was organized shortly after their Break the Cycle Campaign, which raised awareness about sexual abuse across Nigeria.
“We felt the need to continue the conversation, especially with survivors who are trying to rebuild their lives under very tough conditions,” SPAR Community said in a statement.
During the sessions, participants learned about what sexual abuse is, how to understand their rights, and how to create safe spaces for healing and recovery.
In addition, the women and girls were taught how to manage menstrual hygiene properly to improve their health and well-being.
As part of the outreach, sanitary pads were given to all 1,500 women and girls at the camp. The organizers said this was a small but important way to meet the needs of displaced women, many of whom struggle to get basic supplies.
Peace Agada, the founder of SPAR Community, said the organization is committed to creating safe spaces for children and young people by providing them with age-appropriate information and supporting survivors with care and compassion.
She added that SPAR Community will continue to stand with vulnerable groups and survivors, giving them the tools, knowledge, and support they need to live safe and healthy lives.
