The Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has launched an investigation into reports that a Chinese mining company allegedly abandoned Nigerian miners in the Central African Republic (CAR).
The move follows widespread outrage sparked by a viral video circulating online, which purportedly shows Nigerian miners stranded and neglected by a Chinese firm operating in the CAR.
In a statement, the embassy said it was taking the matter seriously and had commenced immediate efforts to verify the facts.
“The Chinese government consistently mandates that all Chinese enterprises and citizens operating abroad strictly comply with local laws and regulations, ensuring all business operations fully adhere to local legal frameworks,” the statement read in part.
It added that the Chinese side would urge the companies involved to handle the situation appropriately, maintain close communication with Nigerian authorities during the investigation, and work jointly to protect the legitimate rights and interests of citizens from both countries.
