The Jigawa State Environmental Protection Agency (JISEPA) has seized unwholesome consumables valued at N14.4 million over the past six months in a coordinated effort to safeguard public health and environmental safety.
Managing Director of JISEPA, Mr. Adamu Sabo, disclosed this in an interview on Saturday in Dutse.
According to him, the seized products were found to be expired, improperly stored, or contaminated, posing serious risks to human health and the environment.
“The sanitary inspections are part of our legal mandate to promote public health and enforce environmental safety standards across the state,” he said.
Sabo explained that all items were officially condemned following due legal processes, having been verified, documented, and approved for destruction in accordance with public health regulations.
“The operation was carried out under the authority of Section 5(1)(2) of the Jigawa State Environmental Protection Law (2009, as amended) and Section 125(1) of the Jigawa State Public Health Security Law (2024),” he noted.
He stressed that the exercise was not intended to punish businesses, but to prevent the circulation of harmful goods and reinforce environmental and sanitary compliance.
“This is a preventive step to protect citizens’ health and maintain the environmental standards of Jigawa State,” Sabo added.
He reiterated the agency’s commitment to working with market associations, traders, and community members to promote full compliance with public health and environmental laws.
Sabo also urged residents to remain vigilant, support sanitation enforcement, and report illegal sales or storage of harmful products.
“Together, we can build a safer, healthier, and more responsible Jigawa State,” he said.
