The Kano State Government has flagged off the distribution of 79,200 bags of fertiliser across all 44 Local Government Areas, in a move to strengthen agricultural productivity and support farmers ahead of the wet season.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who personally launched the initiative, said the fertiliser is being sold at a 50 percent discount to cushion the cost of farming inputs for local farmers. Each LGA will receive three truckloads — 600 bags per truck — bringing the total to 1,800 bags per LGA.
“This effort reaffirms our commitment to boosting food production, supporting rural livelihoods, and achieving food security in Kano State,” Governor Yusuf said. “The discounted fertiliser will make a big difference for our farmers during this year’s wet season.”
The fertiliser distribution comes as part of a broader strategy to expand agricultural infrastructure in the state. In the past two years, the administration has rehabilitated major irrigation schemes and initiated new agricultural projects across 11 LGAs, bringing over 1,250 hectares of land under cultivation.
One of the flagship projects, the ongoing construction of a dam at Dansoshiya in Kiru LGA, is expected to transform the state’s capacity for year-round farming.
“These efforts are not just about farming; they’re about economic growth, job creation, and ensuring no Kano citizen goes hungry,” the governor added.
The initiative has been widely welcomed by farming communities and local leaders who described it as timely and impactful.
With Kano playing a major role in Nigeria’s food production, stakeholders say the state’s focus on agricultural development could have far-reaching benefits for national food security.
