Stigmatisation of mental health does more harm than good, a Professor of Psychiatry, Taiwo Sheikh, said on Friday.
According to him, this constitutes a key barrier to access and utilisation of mental health services, particularly in low and middle-income countries like Nigeria.
Sheikh, also the Coordinator of the Suicide Prevention Advocacy Working Group, said this in an interview in Lagos.
He decried the effects of stigmatisation to mental health, noting that, it contributed immensely to the poor recognition, neglect and lack of attention given to mental health in Nigeria.
He identified some of the harmful effects of stigma as reluctance to seek help or treatment, lack of understanding by family, friends, co-workers or others.
“Also, fewer opportunities for work, school or social activities, bullying and physical violence or harassment,” he added.
The psychiatrist further said that stigma against mental illness could lead to feelings of shame and self-consciousness.
He urged the Nigerian society to shun all active and passive acts of stigma and discrimination against people with mental health disorders.
“Stigma is when someone views you in a negative way because you have a distinguishing characteristic or personal trait that’s thought to be, or is, a disadvantage (a negative stereotype).
“Unfortunately, negative attitudes and beliefs toward people who have a mental health condition are common.
“Stigma does more harm than good; it not only directly affects individuals with mental illness but also their loved ones who support them, often including their family members.
“Let’s put an end to all forms of stigmatisation, particularly to people with mental illness, but show love, care and support,” he said.
Sheikh, however, urged people suffering from mental illnesses to desist from self-perceived stigmatisation such as negative attitudes and internalised shame about their own condition.
“Unfortunately, negative attitudes and beliefs toward people who have mental health condition are common in Nigerian society.
“Don’t let stigma create self-doubt and shame, don’t isolate yourself or equate yourself with your illness.
“You can join a support group like local and international groups. Always seek for help and speak out against stigma.
“Also, pay more attention to the symptoms and effects of mental illness than you do on other aspects of yourself,” he advised.
