[EXPLAINER] Constant joint pain: Its causes and what to do

Joint pain can be very frustrating, be it a dull ache, stiffness, or even sharp discomfort that makes it difficult to move with ease.

One of the things people make out of it is that it usually comes from old age.

However, that’s not always the case.

Anyone can experience joint pain as a result of some injuries, inflammation, infections, autoimmune diseases, or even lifestyle choices.

So, what’s the way out? Let’s break it down:

Identify the causes

Before jumping into what can resolve the issue, it’s important to first understand why you’re experiencing the joint pain.

Here are some common causes:

–Osteoarthritis; when the joint cartilage begins to wear off and tear over time

–Rheumatoid arthritis; This is an Autoimmune disease that causes your immune system to attack your joints.

–Gout: This is also a type of arthritis, and it is caused by the formation of excessive uric acid crystals in your joints

–Injuries such as fractures, sprains, and ligament tears can also cause constant joint pain

–Inflammation: This can be caused by infections, chronic health conditions, and too much pressure and stress on the joints.

Some lifestyle changes that can relief joint pain

–Weight management: One of the things that can stress your joints out is extra weight. This is especially on the knees, hips, and lower back.

If your Joint pain is worsened by extra weight, try losing some weight, because with that, you can significantly reduce the pain.

–Exercise: Exercises with low impact can help your joints. For instance, skirt distance walking and swimming can be beneficial.

–Simple and joint-friendly stretches can improve flexibility and reduce stiffness.

Avoiding long hours of sitting and maintaining good posture is also beneficial.

–Diet & Nutrition: while some foods can worsen joint pain, others can also help to reduce inflammation and improve pain relief.

Some of the foods include;

–Omega-3 fatty acids: Foods like salmon, sardines, walnuts, flaxseeds

–Vitamin D & Calcium: You can get them from dairy products, and leafy greens. They help to strengthen your bones.

–Turmeric & Ginger: They have a natural anti-inflammatory effect

–Fruits & Vegetables such as berries, spinach, and broccoli are packed with antioxidants that can help prevent joint damage.

Foods to avoid

–Processed foods & sugary drinks: They can amplify inflammation.

–Excess red meat: They are high in purines, and this can trigger gout.

–Refined carbohydrates such as white bread, pastries, and fast food can contribute to inflammation.

Some home remedies

–Heat & Cold Therapy: You can apply a warm compress to ease stiffness.

You can also use an ice pack to reduce swelling and pain.

–Massage with Essential Oils: You can use oils like eucalyptus and peppermint

Medications & medical treatments

In some cases, lifestyle changes and home remedies may not be enough, and you might need medication or medical intervention such as :

-Pain relievers (Paracetamol, NSAIDs like ibuprofen) usually cause mild to moderate pain and associated fever

-Supplements containing glucosamine, chondroitin, and collagen may support joint health.

-Corticosteroid Injections may be administered by your doctor in the case of severe inflammation.

-Physical Therapy can help with mobility and maintaining strength.

-Surgery may be ordered in very severe cases: It may include joint replacement for conditions like advanced osteoarthritis.

Joint pain is not something you should just accept to live with.

Small modifications in diet, movement, and self-care can go a long way in keeping your joints healthy and pain-free.

But if pain persists despite your efforts, it’s best to see a doctor for further investigation and proper treatment.
