Three decades after the Beijing Declaration called for decisive action to end gender-based violence (GBV), stakeholders in Bauchi State have reiterated the need for collective efforts to prevent and eliminate GBV.
They stated this during the flag-off of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, organized by the Ministry of Women Affairs, Child Development, and Social Welfare, in collaboration with UNFPA and other partners.
The event began with a solidarity walk from the Bauchi State Secretariat to the Government House, where the First Lady, Aisha Bala Mohammed, emphasized the importance of harmonized efforts in the fight against GBV.
“The 16 Days of Activism can only succeed if all stakeholders work together to bring GBV issues to the forefront and address their impact on survivors,” said Aisha Bala.
She commended partners for their contributions and urged them to sustain efforts beyond the campaign, aiming for a future where Bauchi State is free from all forms of violence against women and girls.
On her part, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Child Development, and Social Welfare, Zainab Baban Takko, stated that the ministry is leveraging structures like the GBV Technical Working Group and local government initiatives to raise awareness.
“There is an enabling environment in Bauchi for partners to implement activities, and we are collaborating to reduce GBV rates across the state,” she said.
Similarly, UNFPA’s Gender and Reproductive Health Analyst and State Program Officer, Deborah Tabara stressed the urgent need to address GBV’s root causes.
“Countless women and girls face GBV daily. UNFPA, in collaboration with partners, is committed to taking decisive action to achieve transformative results and end harmful practices,” she said.
Tabara highlighted UNFPA’s focus on advocacy and innovative solutions to combat violence against women and girls.
“Our 16 Days of Activism campaigns have mobilized awareness, advocacy, and action, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to a world where everyone can live free from fear and violence.”
