The National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) has declared Artificial Intelligence (AI) a non-negotiable pillar for transforming Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET).
This signals a decisive shift toward future-ready skills across Nigeria’s technical institutions.
The Executive Secretary of NBTE, Prof. Idris Bugaje, made the declaration on Friday in Kaduna while opening a three-day online capacity-building programme on AI-driven best practices for TVET institutions.
It was reported that the programme, organized by NBTE, is in collaboration with Huawei Nigeria Limited.
Describing the programme as pivotal for aligning education with rapidly evolving industry demands, Bugaje said emerging technologies are reshaping the workforce.
He insisted that institutions must prepare graduates not just for current jobs, but for future challenges driven by innovation.
Bugaje emphasized that TVET has a responsibility to adapt quickly, ensuring learners acquire relevant competencies that match global technological trends.
He commended Huawei for its continued partnership, noting its role in strengthening digital capacity and supporting curriculum development across polytechnics.
He explained that AI can significantly enhance teaching methods, personalize learning, and improve assessment systems when strategically implemented.
According to him, the real impact of AI lies in how well institutions embed it into their curricula, teaching approaches, and operational frameworks.
Also speaking, Director of Enterprise Delivery and Service at Huawei Nigeria, Zhang Mi, described the training as a major milestone in the ongoing collaboration with NBTE.
He said the partnership focuses on advancing ICT skills development in polytechnics and TVET institutions, positioning Nigeria for a more competitive digital future.
Mi highlighted Huawei’s role in reshaping curricula, including contributions to the current HND AI programme and other relevant ICT courses.
He revealed that Huawei has partnered with over 50 polytechnics nationwide through its ICT Academy programme, delivering training in data communication, security, and cloud services.
Mi reaffirmed Huawei’s commitment to empowering future technology leaders, driving digital transformation, and supporting sustainable growth across Nigeria.
He also praised Bugaje’s leadership in prioritizing ICT development within polytechnics, describing it as visionary and impactful.
