The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) says delayed funding has stalled the public opening of the retired Gen. Theophilus Danjuma Science Museum and Library, earlier scheduled for January.
Dr Oladoyin Odubanjo, Executive Secretary of NAS, disclosed this in an interview with reporters on Tuesday in Abuja.
Odubanjo said that although the building was inaugurated in January, funding gaps had slowed down the furnishing and operational preparations needed for its full opening.
He explained that after the commissioning, the academy continued with finishing touches and furnishing in readiness for the planned January 2026 opening.
“We were planning to open after the commissioning, and we continued furnishing the offices and making necessary corrections. We were hoping to have the place fully furnished, staffed and ready for public use by January 2026,” he said.
He noted that the delayed funds were expected from multiple sources, including the donor of the building, retired Gen. Theophilus Danjuma, who had earlier committed to supporting the facility beyond its construction.
Odubanjo said the museum would no longer meet the January deadline, stressing that adequate staffing remained a critical requirement.
He added that NAS was now working toward a new opening date of May 2026, which would allow time for proper recruitment, training and final preparations.
Located at Wasa District, Cadastral Zone, Apo, in the Federal Capital Territory, the complex sits on 4.18 hectares of land.
Its architectural design features a science museum and library complex, an administrative block, a conference centre with comprehensive facilities and a guest house.
It was also reported that Danjuma funded the construction of the museum and library.
