The Executive Secretary of the Academy of Science, Dr. Oladoyin Odunbanjo has encouraged Nigerians to recognize women, especially in their capabilities, efforts, and achievements in the field of science, to ensure gender equality and representation in the community.
Odunbanjo said this in an interview on Wednesday in Lagos.
He said that there were some unique challenges that women in the field of science face that had led to reduced visibility and recognition in their careers.
The executive secretary mentioned that these challenges stem from a lack of recognition, cultural roles, and other obstacles that hinder their progress in scientific fields.
Odunbanjo emphasized the need for women in science to endure and excel despite these challenges and obstacles, surpassing their male counterparts through hard work and determination.
He also pointed out that many women have attained high positions in the field of science but often have to exert extra effort compared to men to reach those positions.

He highlighted some examples of successful ones in science who have achieved prominent roles within the academy and various universities, showcasing their active determination and merit in attaining these positions.
Odunbanjo acknowledged the additional responsibilities that women often juggle, such as domestic chores and childcare, which could sometimes hinder their professional advancement in science.
He noted the difficulties women face in balancing these responsibilities with their scientific pursuits, especially when it comes to attending conferences or other professional commitments.
According to Odubanjo, despite these challenges, women in science should not be perceived as weaker counterparts.
