The Association of Professional Female Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN), has reiterated its commitment towards unlocking the potential of female engineers in the country.

APWEN President Dr Adebisi Osim, said this at the inauguration of the second Chairperson of APWEN, Ikot Ekpene chapter on Monday.

The event also featured the launch of a scholarship scheme at the Ritman University, Ikot Ekpene.

Osim expressed delight that engineering which used to be a male-dominated field was now witnessing a remarkable shift with more women developing an interest in it.

The President said that APWEN had inaugurated different chapter chairpersons across the country in the past few months

“Today, we gather to celebrate the remarkable strides made by women in the field of engineering, a domain that has long been male-dominated.

“However, the tide is turning, we are witnessing a remarkable shift, where women are not only carving their own paths but breaking long standing barriers.

“APWEN has been at the forefront of this revolution, championing the cause of women in engineering and providing them the needed support and resources to thrive,” she said.

She said that the scholarship scheme would be used to empower a new generation of female engineers in the country.

“Our aim is to ensure that their dreams and aspirations are not hindered by financial constraints.

“When you empower women in engineering, you are not just empowering individuals but the community.

“Women bring unique perspectives, innovative ideas, and a determination to make unparalleled differences,” she said.

On her part, the APWEN Chairman, Ikot Ekpene Chapter, Mrs Kubiatobong Uduak, pledged her commitment to empowering more female engineers.

Uduak urged the Federal Government to evolve more effective policies to protect of girl-child from harassment and discrimination.

The theme of the event is: “Empowering Women in Engineering: Pioneering Paths, Breaking Barriers.”

The Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria APWEN was formed by a handful of women engineers led by Engr. (Mrs.) J. O. Maduka in 1982 and was formally inaugurated in 1983.

It was originally meant to be a pressure group for female engineers.
