The academic achievements of Prof. Iya Abubakar, former Vice-Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria continue to shine at the University of Ibadan (UI), 67 years after his graduation.
This was confirmed by the Head of the Mathematics Department at UI, Dr. Murphy E. Egwe, during a goodwill message at Prof. Abubakar’s 90th birthday celebration on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
The event, held at the NICON Luxury Hotel in Abuja, was jointly organized by the Computer Professionals (Registration Council) of Nigeria and the Nigeria Computer Society.
Dr. Egwe, an associate professor, described Prof. Abubakar’s academic record as unparalleled. He revealed that the Department’s admission records from 1955 showed Abubakar as not only the top student in his class but also the only one to graduate with First Class Honours in Mathematics in 1957.
“The records indicate that even when the names were arranged alphabetically, he still occupied the first position. His achievements have distinguished him as an exceptional ambassador of the Department of Mathematics and the University of Ibadan,” Dr. Egwe said.
Highlighting Abubakar’s global acclaim as a mathematician, Dr. Egwe referred to him as a “unique solution to a world of chaos” and praised his legacy as “unequalled.” He also lauded Abubakar for his exemplary contributions to academia and wished him continued good health.
Prof. Abubakar, who turned 90, remains a celebrated figure in Nigeria’s academic and public service history, with his contributions leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s educational landscape.
