A female lecturer in the department of Biology, Kaduna State University, Dr. Suzie Zaky has secured a post-doctoral scholarship from The World Academy of Science (TWAS), to conduct a study on water quality monitoring using algae.
The Public Relation Officer of the university, Mr Adamu Bargo, made this known in a statement in Kaduna on Friday.
Bargo said that the focus of the research would be on Plankton Morpho Physiological responses to stress factors in determining water quality.
He explained that the research would last for a period of nine months.
He said that the research would be carried out at the National Council for Scientific and Technical Research under the guidance of Prof. Maria Gutierrez of the National Institute of Limnology, Argentina.
According to him, the goal of the research is to strengthen the capacity for sustainable and inclusive water management using bioremediation.
“Dr. Zaky is an ecologist with expertise in water quality monitoring. The research will contribute significantly to the field of water quality management.”
The university spokesman explained that WAS, based in Trieste, Italy, was dedicated to promoting scientific and engineering research for sustainable development in developing countries.
He added that to be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must hold a PhD while the selection process was highly competitive and based on merit.
“Women scientists and scientists from institutions in developing countries are given special consideration,” he said.
