Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ending weeks of political speculation and realigning the state’s leadership with Nigeria’s ruling party.
The announcement came Friday in Uyo, where the governor addressed reporters and a gathering of supporters, confirming that he had concluded months of consultations with stakeholders across the state.
“For some time now, there’s been a lot of talk about whether I would leave the PDP,” Eno said. “It’s a question that has generated a range of opinions. Today, I’m here to put that speculation to rest.”
Eno explained that his decision followed over three months of “intense discussions” with political allies and constituents. “I believe decisions like this should not be rushed. I listened carefully to those who have stood by me and shared their hopes for the future of our state.”
Earlier in the day, the governor submitted a formal resignation letter to his PDP ward chairman, with copies sent to the party’s state and national leadership. He expressed appreciation for the platform the PDP provided, saying, “I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served Akwa Ibom under the PDP these past two years.”
The governor cited shifting political realities and the need to reposition Akwa Ibom for greater national integration as key reasons for joining the All Progressives Congress (APC). “We must recognize when times are changing—and adapt,” he said. “This move aligns with my long-term vision for Akwa Ibom and the development path I believe we must take.”
Reflecting on the significance of the shift, Eno emphasized continuity in values amid political change. Quoting the Dalai Lama, he said, “We should always be open to change, but not let go of our shared values.”
Governor Eno’s defection is expected to significantly alter the political dynamics in Akwa Ibom, a traditional PDP stronghold. It could set the tone for the state’s alignment with federal power ahead of the next general elections.
