In a political twist that has rattled Kano’s political circles, Dawakin Tofa, home base of former APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, has witnessed a mass defection of ruling party supporters to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who personally received the defectors at the Government House on Friday, declared the move a “resounding vote of confidence” in his leadership and policies.
Among the high-profile defectors are Nura Tumfafi, Isyaku Dahiru Kwa, Umar Ismail, Abba Muntari, Sani Shafiu, Hussaini Adamu, Abdullahi Ayuba, Magaji Ruba-Ruba, Sabo Adamu, and Abdullahi Sale Turaki.
“This is a clear endorsement of our programmes and policies over the last two years,” Yusuf said, recalling his statewide campaign tour in 2023, including visits to Dawakin Tofa. “I promised to deliver the dividends of democracy to every part of Kano, and Dawakin Tofa is a key part of that promise. Today’s event is proof that we are on the right path.”
The governor reeled out his administration’s achievements in the area, notably completing a five-kilometre road abandoned by the previous government and pledging to construct a new school. He assured defectors of equal treatment within the NNPP and promised more development projects.
Yusuf also unveiled plans to restructure the Dawanau International Market into a formal agency with a board and managing director for more effective management.
Praising Dawakin Tofa Local Government Chairman for internally generating ₦500 million and channeling it into development, the governor vowed to tackle other local challenges.
The council boss highlighted recent successes, including the renovation of 15 primary schools and sponsorship of over 1,000 tertiary students.
State NNPP Chairman, Hon. Hashim Dungurawa, hailed the defectors’ decision and predicted that Dawakin Tofa would deliver even greater results for the NNPP in the next elections, surpassing the party’s performance in Gwale during the 2023 polls.
