ASHENEWS reports that suspected political thugs on Saturday disrupted elections in some parts of Edati and Lavun local government areas of Niger State.
It was gathered that the hoodlums destroyed election materials in the areas, including votes already cast.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Niger State, Ahmed Yushau Garki, while confirming the incident on Saturday told journalists that its personnel was able to safeguard the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) during the attack.
“As we know the current situation in the country as it concerns insecurity, our personnel who went out for election duty were attacked by political thugs in Lavun and Edati local government areas of Niger State. The thugs destroyed election materials but the BVAS are intact.
“Ideally, the law says that in such places, their votes will not count. However, we are still investigating to ascertain the level of damage and we will update the press as more information comes in from those two areas,” he said.
