Women in Mining in Nigeria (WIMIN) have called for increased access to technical training and professional development to support women in the sector.

The National President of the association, Dr Janet Adeyemi, made the call in a special message to mark International Women’s Day (IWD) on Monday in Abuja.

The message was issued by the association’s National Publicity and Social Secretary, Ize Umar.

Adeyemi said the association looked  forward to stronger institutional support and safer working environments across mining operations.

“This occasion(IWD) also reminds us that more progress is still needed to support women working in the sector.

“ For our members, we look forward to stronger institutional support, increased access to technical training and professional development.

“Greater inclusion of women in leadership and decision-making positions, improved access to funding for women-led mining initiatives, and safer working environments across mining operations.

“We also encourage policies and industry practices that intentionally promote gender inclusion, mentorship opportunities for young female professionals and platforms that amplify the voices and contributions of women in mining,” she said.

According to her, WIMIN remains committed to empowering women, strengthening networks and building a mining industry where women can thrive, lead and contribute meaningfully to national development.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that IWD is marked  annually on March 8 to celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, while also calling for action to accelerate gender parity.

The 2026 IWD theme, ‘For ALL Women and Girls: Rights,Equality, Empowerment.’, calls for stronger action to advance the rights of women and girls and ensure equal opportunities.

It emphasises the need to dismantle barriers to justice, including discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, harmful practices and social norms that undermine the rights of women and girls.
