Senate threatens to block CAC budget, seeks sack of Registrar-General

The Senate on Thursday urged President Bola Tinubu to remove the Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), Hussaini Magaji, over his alleged repeated failure to appear before the Senate Committee on Finance.

The call was made during the Ministry of Finance’s 2026 budget defence and interactive session with members of the economic team in Abuja.

Sen. Orji Kalu (Abia North) moved a motion summoning the Registrar-General and recommending the termination of his appointment. The motion was seconded by Sen. Adams Oshiomhole (Edo North).

Kalu accused the CAC boss of persistently shunning invitations from the committee.

“Since I came to the Senate, he has consistently failed to appear before this committee when invited.

“He is fond of sending junior officers to represent him as if he is above the law. This can no longer continue,” he said.

Oshiomhole, while backing the motion, warned that the National Assembly would withhold budgetary allocation to the commission in the 2026 appropriation if the situation persists.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Sen. Sani Musa (Niger East), described the development as unacceptable, stressing that heads of Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) are constitutionally obligated to honour legislative summons.

“I must address institutional responsibility. The Senate Committee on Finance exercises constitutional authority to oversee MDAs.

“It is, therefore, unacceptable that some MDAs delay submissions, ignore legislative inquiries or refuse to honour invitations.

“Oversight is not an optional courtesy; it is a constitutional requirement,” Musa said.

He warned that the committee would not hesitate to invoke its full constitutional powers to enforce compliance and ensure accountability.
