The Senate on Tuesday confirmed Justice Joseph Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
His confirmation followed the presentation of a report by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adegbonmire Ayodele (APC, Ondo Central).
President Bola Tinubu had, in January, forwarded a request to the Senate seeking the confirmation of Oyewole’s appointment to the apex court. The request, conveyed through a letter to the upper chamber, was made pursuant to Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
After presenting the committee’s report, Ayodele moved a motion for the Senate to receive and consider the nomination of Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court.
The nomination was subsequently confirmed by the Senate through a voice vote.
Following the confirmation, Senate President Godswill Akpabio congratulated Justice Oyewole on his elevation and commended the committee for what he described as a thorough and well-executed assignment.
