The Association of Resident Doctors (ARD) at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Awka, has confirmed that the Anambra State Government has commenced payment of the Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF).
Dr. Joy Okwumuo, President of ARD-COOUTH, disclosed this on Thursday in Awka, noting that the payment fulfils a promise made by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.
The doctors had embarked on a warning strike on September 11, which was suspended two days later following Soludo’s intervention and assurance of prompt payment of the MRTF, alongside an upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS).
Okwumuo commended the governor for keeping his word and prioritising the welfare of doctors in the state.
“On behalf of our members, I confirm that Gov. Soludo’s administration has commenced the payment of the MRTF. We are also grateful to him for agreeing to implement the revised CONMESS, which will significantly improve our working conditions and career progression,” she said.
She added that the association remained hopeful that other outstanding demands, including the recruitment of more doctors and House Officers, would soon be addressed to curb the impact of brain drain.
“We are committed to supporting the realisation of Gov. Soludo’s healthcare agenda,” Okwumuo assured.
