The Sokoto State Government, on Tuesday, launched the revitalization of 116 health facilities across the 23 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.
The flag-off ceremony which took place at the Dinawa Primary Healthcare Centre in Wurno Local Government Area, is being implemented through a joint effort between the Sokoto State Government and the Impact Project, an initiative supported by the World Bank.
Speaking during the occasion, the Sokoto state governor, Ahmed Aliyu, represented by his Deputy, Idris Gobir described the project as a strategic and concerted effort to reshape the healthcare landscape in the state.
“The program is designed not only to improve the health sector and the well-being of the people but also to uplift the lives of mothers, children, and the most vulnerable in society,” he said.
According to him, the initiative is being implemented across all 23 local government areas, with at least one health facility in 166 wards receiving support and upgrades.
The governor emphasized that the wide coverage ensures the benefits of this transformative project will be felt in every corner of the state, leaving no community behind.
He further stated that, “The project is a crucial step in modernizing healthcare infrastructure, enabling better data management, improved decision-making, and enhanced health outcomes for all.”
The governor therefore urged contractors to maintain high-quality standards in all identified facilities and to focus on achieving greater immunization coverage across the state.
In his address, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Faruk Abubakar, assured that the ministry and its agencies remain committed to implementing one of the nine priority areas of Governor Ahmed Aliyu’s Smart and Innovative Agenda for the health sector.
Dr. Abubakar stated that the occasion was a clear demonstration of the governor’s commitment to improving healthcare services at the grassroots level, especially in hard-to-reach communities.
He also acknowledged the contributions of other ministries working to achieve universal health coverage in the state.
The Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad III, in a goodwill message delivered by the District Head of Wurno, Kabir Cigari, expressed satisfaction that both the health and education sectors are receiving adequate attention from the current administration.
