The Nigerian Red Cross Society has received 28 categories of humanitarian equipment from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to strengthen disaster response and enhance its capacity to manage emergency operations nationwide.
The Secretary General of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Dr. Abubakar Kende, received the equipment on Friday in Abuja and described the donation as a major boost to the organizations emergency response infrastructure.
Kende said humanitarian work had become increasingly complex and demanding, requiring specialized human and material resources, noting that efficient logistics systems were critical for the timely transportation and delivery of relief materials during emergencies.
He explained that the handover marked a new phase in a year-long partnership between WFP and the Nigerian Red Cross aimed at strengthening emergency preparedness, communication capacity and supply chain systems across the country.
According to him, the enhanced capacity is expected to enable faster and more coordinated interventions, improve warehousing and supply chain operations, strengthen communication during crises and boost preparedness for climate-related and conflict-induced emergencies.
Kende added that WFP also supported a detailed organizational assessment to secure long-term improvements, strengthen operational structures, enhance coordination mechanisms and reinforce the Nigerian Red Cross Society’s ability to respond effectively to emergencies nationwide.
