The National President of the Association of Radiologists in Nigeria (ARIN), Prof. Olalekan Oyinloye, has emphasised the association’s commitment to promoting sub-specialisation among radiologists.
Speaking at ARIN’s 7th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference on Thursday in Abuja, Oyinloye defined sub-specialisation as focusing on a specific component of radiology to enhance expertise.
“Currently, general radiology is prevalent, but the global trend is towards sub-specialisation.
“This includes neuro-radiology, women and breast imaging, paediatric imaging, and musculoskeletal imaging.
“Sub-specialisation minimises errors, ensures accuracy, and translates to better patient management and diagnosis.”
Oyinloye cited a lack of equipment as a major hindrance, stressing the need for Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) to procure expensive equipment.
A former ARIN President, Prof. Omolola Atalabi, echoed the need for specialisation, stating that general radiology was outdated.
The Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Agaja James, explained that the conference’s theme, “Healthcare Finance in Radiology: The Role of Public Private Partnership,” aimed to secure support from individuals, organisations, and government.
“The goal is to replicate this idea nationwide, ensuring essential equipment like X-ray and ultrasound machines are accessible in rural areas, enhancing citizens’ lifespan.
“We have decided this year to invite our sponsors, key players, and Ministers to replicate this idea in their respective states, which is why we’re discussing health financing to obtain equipment for rural areas.
“Having this equipment in rural areas will benefit all citizens of this country.”
“We’ve chosen to collaborate with the government and private investors to acquire essential equipment, such as X-ray and ultrasound machines, to diagnose specific illnesses and diseases, and ultimately increase life expectancy.”
The conference sub-themes included “Sub-Specialisation in Radiology in Nigeria” and “Artificial Intelligence in Radiology in Nigeria.”
