The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Monday inaugurated a newly constructed nursing quarters and two mega primary schools in Maiduguri, built by Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum.
Tinubu also launched the North-East National Community Food Bank Programme, an initiative conceived by her office to combat hunger and malnutrition across the country.
The nursing quarters, located beside the State Specialist Hospital, consist of eight blocks of six flats each. The units are fully furnished and equipped with air-conditioning for the comfort of health workers.
The First Lady also commissioned two mega primary schools — Aliyakeri and Abbaganaram Primary Schools. Each school has 48 classrooms with a capacity for thousands of pupils, and is equipped with an ICT centre, modern sports facilities, e-learning systems, and solar-powered electricity.
Tinubu commended Governor Zulum for his people-centred governance, describing the projects as vital to improving healthcare human resources and the quality of education in Borno State.
“You have done very well. I am really privileged and honoured to be here today. What we have seen so far in Borno is quite encouraging,” she said.
The Zulum administration has so far completed 104 mega schools, with several others at various stages of completion across the 27 local government areas of the state.
Tinubu also launched a ₦200 million empowerment programme for 2,000 vulnerable women across the state. Each beneficiary will receive ₦100,000 and a sewing machine.
She commended Governor Zulum for the initiative, saying it demonstrates his deep commitment to the welfare of the people of Borno.
Of the beneficiaries, 400 are from Maiduguri metropolis, 200 from Jere LGA, 100 from Biu LGA, while the remaining 24 LGAs have 50 beneficiaries each.
In addition, the First Lady presented keys of brand-new utility vehicles to eight outstanding teachers, head teachers, principals, TVET coordinators, and staff of the Borno Ministry of Education in recognition of their dedication.
In a related development, Governor Zulum presented a house to a ministry watchman, Baba Modu Fandi, for his long service, while the First Lady rewarded him with an additional ₦2 million.
Earlier, Tinubu reiterated that child malnutrition remains a top priority of President Bola Tinubu’s administration. She said the Community Food Bank Programme was designed as a sustainable solution to provide healthy and nutritious food to vulnerable children under six years old.
The programme, implemented in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, the National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, and the Bank of Agriculture, aims to bridge the gap between food surplus and communities in need through a well-structured national food bank system.
Tinubu urged the wives of North-East governors to encourage their husbands to fully support the programme.
