The National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) – Federal Health Institutions Sector has denied reports that it has ended its seven-day warning strike.
The Daily Sun earlier reported that the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, said the union had suspended the strike after a closed-door meeting with its leaders.
But the union disagreed with the minister’s claim. The National Public Relations Officer of NANNM-FHI, Omomo Tibiebi, said the strike is still ongoing, even after the meeting with the minister.
“The strike has not been suspended,” Tibiebi said. “Yes, our union leaders met with the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Pate, but it was the minister who went to the media to say the strike was over.”
“He is not the one who started the strike, so he cannot end it. The strike is still in progress,” he added.
Tibiebi also said that a National Executive Council meeting would take place on Saturday. That meeting will decide whether the promises made by the government are enough for the strike to be suspended.
