The Federal Government has commended the United Kingdom for renewing its support for the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda, reinforcing efforts to advance gender inclusion, peacebuilding, and security initiatives across Nigeria.
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, gave the commendation on Monday in Abuja after engagements at the Nigeria-UK Defence and Security Forum.
She said the forum provided an opportunity for the United Kingdom to reaffirm its commitment to supporting the implementation of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 across Nigeria.
According to the minister, the UK also pledged continued support for increasing women’s participation in peacebuilding, conflict prevention, mediation, and post-conflict recovery initiatives in affected communities nationwide.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim further hailed the UK-funded SPRING Programme for promoting peace, strengthening public institutions, and empowering women to contribute meaningfully to safer and more resilient communities.
The minister described the renewed commitment as a significant boost to Nigeria’s efforts to fully implement the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and strengthen inclusive peacebuilding nationwide.
She said the implementation of UNSCR 1325 remained critical to protecting women during conflicts while ensuring they play greater roles in peacebuilding, security management, and recovery processes.
“Women should not only be protected during conflicts but should also serve as leaders, negotiators, and decision-makers in building lasting peace,” she said.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment under the leadership of President Bola Tinubu to working closely with development partners in promoting inclusive governance, stability, and sustainable peace.
She said the government would continue strengthening partnerships that support women’s participation at all levels of peacebuilding, conflict prevention, mediation, and security decision-making processes.
The minister expressed confidence that Nigeria’s partnership with the United Kingdom would accelerate the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda and improve lives across communities throughout the country.
