ASHENEWS reports that 25 fellows from the Niger State Health Misinformation Management Team, under Nigeria Health Watch (NHW), have commenced sensitization campaigns across the state to raise awareness about the dangers of sharing unverified health information.
The team, led by state coordinator Daniel Atori and supported by partner organizations, began their outreach with a road walk from the Obasanjo Shopping Complex Roundabout through Minna, concluding at the Late Sen. Dahiru Awaisu Primary Health Care, Old Airport Road.
In his address, Mr. Atori emphasized the critical need to combat health misinformation, highlighting its detrimental effects on individuals, communities, and the broader state and national health landscapes.
He noted that the fellowship is committed to tackling the spread of false information and rumors that undermine efforts to provide quality and affordable healthcare.
“I appeal to everyone to disregard rumors and misinformation, especially those related to health. Always verify and seek accurate information from credible sources,” Atori urged.
“If you come across information, particularly on social media, that you’re unsure about, please verify it before sharing.”
During the interactive session, various speakers encouraged attendees to avoid spreading rumors, refrain from self-medication, and consistently seek professional advice for health concerns.
State Health Educator, Yusuf Ali specifically addressed misconceptions surrounding government health programs, particularly immunization, noting that all vaccines undergo rigorous safety checks and certification before use.
Partnering organizations include the Ministry of Secondary and Tertiary Health Care, the Commissioner for Primary Health Care, the Ministry of Information, the National Orientation Agency (NOA), and the Ministry of Women Affairs.
A highlight of the event was the distribution of long-lasting insecticide nets (LLIN) to women at the primary healthcare facility and other patients, reinforcing the fellowship’s commitment to community health and well-being.
