Dr Amina Sani-Bello, wife of Niger state governor has, in the past five years, carried out free cervical and breast cancer screening for 9,401 women in the state.
To this end, 1,650 women were screened in 2016, 2056 women in 2017, 2508 in 2018, 2189 in 2019, and 998 in 2020.

In a statement by her press secretary, Aisha Wakaso to commemorate the World Cancer Day, Dr Sani-Bello said that the screening was done to reduce the burden of treatment on the masses.
According to her, 1,650 women were screened in 2016; 2, 056 in 2017; 2,508 in 2018; 2,189 in 2019 and 998 in 2020.
Bello also sponsored 101 women for lumpectomy and biopsies; 55 for mammogram and ultra sound scan while 10 were currently undergoing free treatment at the Federal Medical Center Bida.
She stressed on the need to strengthen actions aimed at reducing the impact of cancer in Nigeria.
Sani-Bello added that this could be achieved by reducing cancer risk factors, screening, detecting cancer at early stages, treatment and improving access to diagnosis and palliative care.
She also stressed the need for early detection and treatment to reduce the deaths related to cancer in the nation.
“Cancer is a disease that affects everyone in different ways and everyone has the power to take action to reduce the impact of the disease on individuals, families and communities”, the statement reads.
