The Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Hon. Dr. Iziaq Adekunle Salako, has praised the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) for their commitment to improving the health and well-being of Nigerians.
He gave the commendation on Friday during the 14th Biennial Delegates Conference of MDCAN in Enugu, which had the theme “Physician, heal thyself.”
Represented by Prof. John Emaimo, Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Allied Health Sciences, Enugu, the Minister stressed the importance of doctors looking after their own health so they can give better care to their patients.
Dr. Salako also spoke about mental health challenges faced by doctors worldwide. He mentioned “Otanisi psychosis” and the “Japa syndrome,” issues affecting many Nigerian medical professionals.
He acknowledged the sacrifices and difficulties doctors face in their work but urged them to embrace self-care and seek help whenever necessary. He encouraged participants to discuss practical ways of addressing these challenges and strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.
The Minister also pointed out the government’s role in improving doctors’ welfare, providing a better work environment, and ensuring adequate infrastructure for safe healthcare delivery.
He thanked MDCAN for their dedication to advancing medicine in Nigeria and for their tireless efforts to safeguard the health of citizens.
His message reminded doctors about the importance of self-care and highlighted the need for collective action to overcome challenges in the country’s health sector.
Although he could not attend the conference in person, Dr. Salako sent his warm regards and wished the participants a successful and impactful event.
The conference brought together medical and dental consultants from across Nigeria, who shared ideas, expertise, and recommendations on how to improve healthcare delivery.
The outcomes and resolutions from the event are expected to make a lasting impact on Nigeria’s health system.
