The Kaduna State Ministry of Health has convened a five-day workshop on the Maternal and Newborn Mortality Reduction Innovation and Initiative (MAMII). The workshop, which is in support of the commitment of Governor Uba Sani’s efforts in the sector, is in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health and with support from development partners.
The state deputy governor, Dr. Hadiza Balarabe, reaffirmed the state’s unwavering commitment to reducing maternal and newborn mortality.
She noted that this commitment is backed by measurable actions and strategic investments, including the allocation of over 15% of the state’s annual budget to the health sector. This allocation covers infrastructure development, facility upgrades, and the strengthening of the health workforce.
Dr. Balarabe also announced that the Governor has approved the recruitment of 1,800 health workers to enhance service delivery across the state.
According to her, these efforts are part of a comprehensive strategy aimed at saving lives, ensuring access to quality healthcare, and upholding the dignity of mothers and newborns in Kaduna State.
She emphasized that childbirth should be a moment of joy—not a time of risk—and that every child’s birth should be a celebration of life, not a mere statistic.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Umma K. Ahmed, described the workshop as the beginning of a crucial journey requiring strong coordination at all levels.
She highlighted the political will, strategic direction, and substantial investment by the Kaduna State Government under the leadership of Governor Uba Sani to tackle maternal and newborn mortality, which remains a top priority.
Umma stated that the state is proactively addressing both structural and financial barriers that hinder timely access to maternal and newborn care.
She also expressed appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Health and all development partners for their unwavering support and collaboration.
The five-day workshop, which commenced on Monday, April 17, has drawn participants from a wide range of stakeholders, including the National Coordinator of the MAMII project, Dr. Dayo; the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health; heads of health agencies; development partners; faith-based organizations; non-governmental organizations; sister agencies; directors within the Ministry of Health; and other key players in the health sector.
