A Jigawa-based medical practitioner, Dr Usman Abba Ahmed, has been elected National President of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP) for the 2026–2028 tenure.
Ahmed emerged alongside 10 other executive officers at the Society’s Annual General Meeting held during its NSP Unity Conference 2026 in Kano State.
The week-long conference, which took place from October 25 to 31, attracted more than 1,000 physiotherapists, researchers, academics, students and other healthcare stakeholders from across Nigeria.
As National President, Ahmed will lead the Society’s National Executive Council and represent the physiotherapy profession in engagements with government agencies, regulatory bodies and healthcare institutions.
The incoming council is expected to prioritise members’ welfare, strengthen clinical research and push for greater integration of physiotherapy services into Nigeria’s national healthcare system.
Other members of the newly elected executive include Dr Chioma Lynda Onochukwu as Vice President, Dr Olusegun Adejare as General Secretary and Dr Jibril S. Idris as Assistant General Secretary.
The remaining officers are Dr Joseph Olamide Samuel, National Treasurer; Dr Auwal Shittu, Financial Secretary; Dr Isaac B. Akinola, National Public Relations Officer; Dr Saminu Ali Muhammad, Assistant National PRO I; and Dr Olusola Awoniyi, Assistant National PRO II.
Dr Ahule Tubokenimi and Dr Babatunde Ileyemi were elected Auditor I and Auditor II, respectively.
The conference also featured clinical plenaries, specialised workshops and scientific sessions focusing on contemporary rehabilitation practices.
It further hosted the inaugural Early Career Physiotherapists Congress and Seminar, which attracted more than 250 physiotherapists within their first 10 years of professional practice.
The seminar provided opportunities for mentorship, leadership development and engagement with regulatory stakeholders, including the Registrar of the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists Board of Nigeria, Professor Rufa’i Yusuf Ahmad.
