The FCT chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has strongly condemned the assault on one of its members by suspected ‘one-chance’ criminals in Abuja.
The condemnation was contained in a statement signed by the chapter’s Chairman, Mr Jama Medan, and made available to newsmen on Wednesday.
Medan said the victim, a nurse at Wuse General Hospital, had completed her afternoon shift but stayed behind to assist a colleague on night duty in stabilizing a critically ill patient.
According to him, the nurse was attacked, beaten, and left seriously injured while returning home after work.
“She is currently receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU),” he said.
“The leadership and members of NANNM, FCT Chapter, strongly condemn, in the strongest possible terms, yet another brutal attack on an innocent nurse,” Medan stated.
He noted that the incident serves as a painful reminder of a previous attack on a health worker at the Federal Medical Centre, Jabi, which remains unresolved.
Medan decried the repeated attacks on nurses working across the FCT—including in Wuse, Asokoro, Kubwa, Maitama, Kuje, and Gwarinpa—describing such incidents as unacceptable.

He called for a thorough and immediate investigation, urging security authorities to identify, arrest, and prosecute the perpetrators to serve as a strong deterrent.
Medan stressed that the safety of nurses and other healthcare workers must be treated as an urgent national priority.
He appealed to the FCT Minister to direct security agencies, including the Department of State Services, to strengthen surveillance around hospitals and ensure regular patrols of vulnerable bus stops.
He further demanded swift justice for affected healthcare workers.
“No healthcare worker should risk their life simply for serving humanity,” Medan said.
The chairman warned that many nurses, especially women, now feel unsafe commuting to and from work, describing some bus stops near hospitals as “death traps”.
He called for immediate, decisive, and sustained action to guarantee the safety and security of all nurses and healthcare workers in the FCT.
