A graphic circulating widely on social media, purporting to rank countries by average erect penis length with Sudan at the top (17.95 cm), followed by the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ecuador, Ghana, and Nigeria, has drawn millions of views. However, rigorous scientific scrutiny reveals that the claims are unsubstantiated.

The list originates from a 2015 WorldData.info compilation, which drew on self-reported data from unverified online surveys and non-peer-reviewed sources. Fact-checking organizations have repeatedly debunked this. A comprehensive 2015 meta-analysis published in the British Journal of Urology International (Veale et al.), encompassing 15,521 measurements, established a global erect mean of 13.12 cm (5.16 inches). The study highlighted negligible inter-country variations attributable to methodological inconsistencies rather than biological differences.

Regional experts echo these findings. Dr. Olufemi Adebayo, a consultant urologist at Nigeria’s National Hospital in Abuja, described the rankings as “pseudoscientific misinformation” in a 2024 interview with Punch Nigeria. “Self-measurement biases inflate figures by 1-2 cm, per local clinic data,” he noted, urging focus on verifiable health metrics.

In Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asiedu, head of urology at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, told Graphic Online in 2023: “No peer-reviewed African study supports such rankings; they distract from pressing issues like erectile dysfunction prevalence, affecting 20-30% of men here per our surveys.” The West African Health Organization (WAHO) 2025 report similarly cautions against unverified viral claims, emphasizing evidence-based sexual health research amid rising online misinformation.

Fact-checkers Snopes (2022) and Reuters (2024) have classified identical lists as false, citing selection bias and lack of standardized protocols. No major global or African health authority, including the World Health Organization or Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Health, validates these figures.

As social media engagement surges – with shares up 300% on platforms like X this week – medical professionals call for media literacy. Reliable data remains limited to controlled studies, underscoring the need for caution with sensational claims.
