Imagine a situation where your baby grows in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus. That’s what an ectopic pregnancy is. It is a medical emergency. Why does this happen, and can the baby be saved? Let’s TALK!
What is ectopic pregnancy?
It is a situation where fertilized egg implants outside of the uterus (womb).
This can be anywhere in the reproductive system, however it’s mostly seen in fallopian tubes.
What causes this to happen?
It’s mostly due to blockage or scarring of the tubes.
This can be a result of;
- Pelvic inflammatory disease
- Endometriosis
- Previous surgery
- Previous ectopic pregnancy
- Congenital malformation
- Lifestyle factors like smoking.
How do you know your pregnancy is ectopic?

You may experience;
- Vaginal bleeding
- Pain in lower abdomen, pelvis and back
- Dizziness or weakness.
These symptoms are seen in normal pregnancies, however they can be exaggerated in ectopic situations.
What are the complications?
- A ruptured fallopian tube;
Fallopian tubes are not as flexible as the womb.
When they get stretched to their limit, they burst.
If this happens, severe and life threatening internal bleeding follows.
Immediate action should be taken, ectopic pregnancies can cause death.
How is it diagnosed?
Several people don’t ..know they have an ectopic pregnancy till they visit the hospital.
It can be diagnosed using;
- Urine tests
- Blood tests
- Ultrasound exams
Once it’s confirmed, your health care provider would discuss treatment options with you.

Treatment involves;
- Medications to stop ..the growth of the baby
- Surgery to remove the pregnancy if the fallopian tube has ruptured.
Can the baby be saved?
Unfortunately not.
An ectopic pregnancy is an abnormal event, the baby cannot be saved.
How do you prevent this from happening?
You can’t prevent an ..ectopic pregnancy, however you can reduce your risk of having it.
- Treat all sexually transmitted infections
- Maintain a healthy weight
- Quit smoking and reduce alcohol
- Practice safe sex
- Manage underlying health conditions.
It is usually discovered ..early, during antenatal visits.
Don’t be worried, it might be emotionally draining but with your doctor’s help, you can carry another pregnancy to full term.
