The Imo State Government has urged youths to refrain from drug abuse, especially as the yuletide season approaches.
This was contained in a statement issued on Thursday in Owerri by the Special Adviser to Governor Hope Uzodimma on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Chief Ezechukwu Obonna.
Obonna warned that the abuse of drugs and harmful substances poses serious dangers to individuals, families and the community at large.
He stressed the need for youths and other citizens to focus on the joy and meaning of the festive season rather than engaging in drug peddling or related activities.
“The yuletide season is a time to celebrate, but it is also a time when many young people are tempted to try drugs or get involved in negative activities.
“The dangers of illicit drugs include threats to health, well-being and the future, as well as addiction, strained relationships, financial ruin and even death.
“I urge all Imo youths to resist this temptation and build a bright future,” he said.
He cautioned youths against succumbing to peer pressure or curiosity, noting that the risks far outweigh any perceived benefits.
Obonna highlighted the dire consequences of drug abuse, including mental health challenges such as anxiety and depression, as well as social problems like isolation and community rejection.
He added that drug abuse could also lead to legal consequences, including imprisonment and fines.
The special adviser encouraged youths to engage in positive activities such as sports and arts, build healthy relationships, pursue education and career goals, and report suspicious activities to authorities.
He also urged youths struggling with addiction or tempted to experiment with drugs to take advantage of the state government’s youth support programmes and counseling and rehabilitation centres.
Meanwhile, Obonna appealed to parents and guardians to speak openly with their children and wards about the risks of substance abuse and provide a supportive environment.
“This yuletide, commit to staying off illicit drugs, prioritize your future, protect your health, and contribute to building a stronger Imo State,” he said.
