President Ibrahim Traoré of Burkina Faso has initiated the construction of 55 communal medical centers and five resuscitation units across the nation in a move to enhance the country’s healthcare system. This ambitious project, part of the Presidential Health Initiative (IPS), aims to modernize healthcare infrastructure and improve access to quality medical services for all citizens.
The official launch took place in Bérégadougou, a town in the Cascades region, marked by the laying of the foundation stone for one of the new medical centers. These facilities will offer a range of services, including emergency care, imaging, pharmacies, operating rooms, hospitalization wards, laboratories, blood banks, and administrative offices.
The IPS outlines a five-year plan to construct these 55 medical centers and establish five anesthesia and intensive care units in hospitals nationwide. In 2025 alone, the plan includes building approximately 20 medical centers, two hemodialysis units, five resuscitation units, and a heart institute. Additionally, innovative molecular diagnostics for breast cancer will be introduced to enhance early detection and treatment.

President Traoré’s commitment to healthcare reform is further evidenced by allocating 12% of the state budget to the Ministry of Health. This funding supports upgrading hospital equipment, reducing costs for medical examinations, and acquiring advanced medical technologies.
This initiative reflects a broader trend across Africa, where leaders are increasingly investing in healthcare infrastructure to foster economic development and social stability. By prioritizing health, these efforts not only address immediate medical needs but also stimulate local economies and create employment opportunities.
President Traoré’s decisive actions demonstrate a commitment to tangible improvements in public welfare, positioning Burkina Faso on a path toward a healthier and more prosperous future.
