Aproko Doctor: Locust beans boost heart health, overall well-being

A medical doctor and health influencer, Dr Egemba Chinonso, popularly known as Aproko Doctor, says locust beans support heart health and improve overall well-being.

Chinonso made the remarks in a health education video shared on his Facebook page.

He described locust beans, known as ‘iru’ in western Nigeria, as a “superfood” that has been cherished for generations because of its numerous health benefits.

According to him, iru is rich in potassium, a mineral that helps blood vessels relax and contributes to maintaining healthy blood pressure.

“Iru is also a good source of probiotics — beneficial bacteria that support gut health. Consuming it can help reduce bloating associated with poor digestion while improving the balance of beneficial bacteria in the intestines,” he said.

Chinonso added that the traditional condiment contains vitamin A, an essential nutrient that supports healthy vision.

He encouraged Nigerians to include moderate amounts of iru in soups and other local dishes, stressing that healthy eating does not always require expensive foods.

The medical doctor, however, acknowledged the condiment’s strong smell, saying its distinctive aroma should not discourage people from enjoying its nutritional value.

“Iru may have a strong smell, but it remains one of our most nutritious local foods,” he said.

Chinonso urged Nigerians to embrace indigenous foods with proven nutritional benefits as part of efforts to maintain healthier lifestyles.
