General Hospital Apapa has reaffirmed its commitment to quality maternal and child healthcare, breastfeeding counselling and public health education.

The Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Ime Okon, represented by Dr Mosunmola Adebayo, Head of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department, made the assertion during the hospital’s 2026 World Breastfeeding Week celebration.

According to a statement issued by the hospital on Wednesday, the event took place on Tuesday in Apapa and brought together nursing mothers, expectant mothers and healthcare professionals.

Okon said the hospital remained committed to improving maternal and child health through quality healthcare, education and community engagement.

He encouraged mothers to embrace exclusive breastfeeding and seek professional support whenever challenges arose.

Also speaking, Consultant Paediatrician Dr Tunji Adewoye described breastfeeding as one of the most effective interventions for improving child survival, nutrition, food security and long-term health outcomes.

He emphasised the need to strengthen breastfeeding support systems within families, healthcare facilities, workplaces and communities.

Speaking on shared responsibility, Mrs Margaret Osinowo, Apex Nurse, said successful breastfeeding required the collective support of mothers, families, healthcare professionals, employers and society.

Miss Adejumoke Adigun of GHA highlighted the significance of World Breastfeeding Week and global efforts to promote breastfeeding as a key public health intervention.

Mr Abiodun Adeniyi, Dietitian 1, GHA, urged mothers to maintain healthy eating during breastfeeding, noting that proper nutrition supports maternal well-being and optimal infant growth.

A practical breastfeeding demonstration was conducted, guiding mothers on proper positioning, attachment and effective breastfeeding techniques.

Breastfeeding myths were dispelled during an interactive session, reinforcing evidence-based breastfeeding practices among participants.

The hospital management urged families and communities to support breastfeeding as a vital investment in healthier children and a healthier society.
