Adamawa state government has begun screening no fewer than 230,435 residents for hypertension and diabetes, under the Federal Government’s Project 10 Million health initiative.
Gov. Ahmadu Fintiri disclosed this at the inauguration of the exercise in Yola on Monday.
Fintiri, represented by his deputy, Prof. Kaletapwa Farauta, said those found to be in need of further care would be referred to the state’s healthcare facilities for specialised attention and guidance on managing their health.
“This week-long screening, beginning today, Oct. 28, 2024, will not only allow people to know their blood pressure and blood sugar levels but will also enable early intervention for those at risk.
“To all the people of Adamawa, this is an initiative for you and your families. Let us take charge of our health by utilizing this unique opportunity,” he said.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Felix Tangwami, explained that Project 10 Million is a Federal Government health initiative designed to address the rising tide of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), specifically hypertension and diabetes.
According to him, globally, it is estimated that 1.28 billion adults aged 30 to 79, suffer from hypertension or diabetes, with two-thirds of these cases occurring in low- and middle-income countries, where nearly half remain undiagnosed.
“We call upon our communities, traditional leaders, religious institutions, and all citizens of Adamawa State to participate actively in this initiative.
“Let us measure our blood pressure and glucose levels, take proactive steps towards our health, and collectively work towards a healthier, longer life for all,” he said.
Tangwami further said the exercise was taking place at Government facilities across 21 Local Government Areas in the state.
Adamu Ibrahim a beneficiary thanked and appreciated the free screening for him to knew his status.
