Sokoto state governor, Ahmad Aliyu on Thursday pardoned 73 inmates who were serving various jail terms in various custodial centers in the state.
A statement from the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, said Aliyu made this significant decision in accordance with Section 212 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The statement, signed by Mr Nasiru Binji, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, who is also the Chairman of the council, stated that this compassionate act aimed to provide the inmates with a ray of hope and a second chance at life.
“This decision brings newfound hope to those who have been living behind bars, separated from their families and dreams.
“Out of the 73 inmates, six who were serving life sentences have had their sentences reduced to 25 years.
“For the remaining 67 inmates, their release is unconditional, offering them the opportunity to start anew, rebuild their lives, and make amends for their past mistakes,” Binji said.
He added that the action by the governor was part of the commemoration of Nigeria’s 63rd Independence anniversary celebrations, symbolising the belief in the power of redemption and the importance of giving individuals a chance to reform.
