President Muhammadu Buhari has felicitated the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Global Vaccines Alliance, Gavi, Dr. Abdullahi Pate.

The president’s message was contained in a tweet he made on Tuesday evening.

President Buhari described Pate’s appointment as a win, not just for him, but for Nigeria and the African continent.

“I congratulate the incoming Chief Executive Officer of the @gavi Vaccine Alliance, Dr. @muhammadpate; the first African to lead Gavi. This is a milestone moment not only for him personally but also for Nigeria and Africa. Nigeria is very proud of Dr. Pate’s accomplishments.

“Dr. Pate will bring his knowledge, expertise, and rich experience to bear in increasing equitable access to vaccines, to further reduce the disturbing levels of child mortality in Africa and all over the world. We look forward to working closely with him, ” he said in the tweet.

Gavi, renowned as an international organization promoting vaccine distribution and efficiency disclosed Pate’s appointment in a blog post made on Monday.

Pate, who is expected to resume on 3rd August 2023 will be taking over from Dr. Seth Berkley, who will step down after 12 years of leading the Alliance.

According to the Organization, Pate’s selection followed a yearlong extensive recruitment processled by the Chair of the Gavi Board, Professor José Manuel Barroso.
