The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) has commended Gov. Caleb Mutfwang for the construction of new roads and the rehabilitation of existing ones in Plateau State.
Mr. Yakubu Dalyop, Chairman of the union in Plateau, gave the commendation during a visit to the governor on Wednesday in Jos, accompanied by other officials and members from the 17 local government areas (LGAs) of the state.
He said the rehabilitation and construction of roads had improved the safety of drivers and passengers on the highways.
According to him, the projects have also boosted economic activities and improved the state’s revenue profile.
“We thank you for your visionary leadership. We appreciate you for showing courage, character, and leadership.
“As primary stakeholders who spend our lives on the roads, we are feeling the impact of your transformative administration.
“We deeply appreciate the extensive road rehabilitation and construction across the state.
“We, however, ask for more to ensure the safety of the motoring community in the state,” he said.
Dalyop also urged the governor to introduce a soft loan scheme and transport intervention programmes for drivers in the state to boost their incomes and contribute to the state’s economic growth.
He further thanked the governor for banning illegal motor parks and affirmed the union’s support for his administration.
“We commend you for the ban on illegal motor parks in the state. The move has not only reduced insecurity but has also restored order. We urge you to ensure that this effort is sustained,” he said.
Dalyop also called on chairmen of the LGAs to construct standard motor parks in their respective localities.
Responding, Mutfwang thanked members of the union for the visit and for supporting his administration.
He promised to upgrade existing motor parks to international standards and construct new ones in strategic locations.
“We shall upgrade all approved motor parks in the state and also establish trailer parks in key locations,” the governor said.
He, however, advised commercial drivers to remain vigilant and avoid being used as instruments for criminal activities.
Mutfwang also called on the union to partner with the government in the campaign against the production and consumption of illicit drugs in the state.
