The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Jigawa Command, has arrested 67-year-old Garba Musa for allegedly subjecting his daughter, Ummi, to sub-human condition.
Garba was arrested alongside his 50-year-old wife, Aisha, at Tukur Quarters in Dutse Local Government Area of the state.
This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Dutse by the Spokesman of the command, Mr Adamu Shehu.
Shehu said the arrest followed a report of alleged case of violence against 25-year-old Ummi filed on May 26 with the corps by a rights activitist.
“The activist reported that he received information from the suspect’s neighbours that Ummi was locked up in a room in the house for many years.
“The victim has been rescued, even though she looked distressed, unkempt and depressed.
“The room she lived served as her toilet and her food served on bare floor, like an animal.
“The suspect claimed that his daughter was locked up in view of her mental illness,” the statement added.
It further explained that the victim was alleged to be gallivanting around, causing problem in the neighborhood.
Shehu added that the suspect presented a hospital card obtained in 2013, 2014 and 2018 from the Psychiatric Hospital, Kazaure, where she had been referred for treatment.
He stated that preliminary investigations revealed that the victim’s mother, who separated with her husband for about 30 years, was allegedly denied access to her children staying with him.
He explained that investigation was ongoing to ascertain the mental health status of the victim.
