Nigeria’s Ministry of Water Resources has disclosed that it would partner with the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, APWEN, to improve water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) across the nation.
The Minister, Engineer Suleiman Adamu dropped the hint when members of Association, led by the 17th President, Engineer Elizabeth Eterigho paid him courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday.
According to Adamu, the sanitation drive across the country has been successful because of the involvement of women in the campaign, adding that the Ministry is always ready to collaborate with women associations because they play better roles in improving sanitation in the country.
He also urged the women engineers to improve on the campaign for hand washing as it is gradually being abandoned.
Adamu further said that the Ministry has plans to carry out regarding WASH and irrigation for women, especially in the rural area this year.
Earlier, Eterigho said she was in the Ministry alongside other members to discuss the areas the Association can collaborate with the ministry in the area of climate change, WASH, eradicating open defecation and improving food security.
She expressed the readiness of the Association to improve the productivity of women and serve as mentors for young female engineers across the country.
The 9th president, Engineer Valerie Agberagba who was in the entourage lamented over the increasing spate of open defecation in some communities in Abuja.
She added that APWEN can help the Ministry to improve the campaign against open defecation across all the states in the nation which the association has members.
