The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI), has donated 3,000 ‘save 80 efficient cook stoves’, to widows IDPs and other indigent women across Nigera.
The stove was designed and manufactured by Atmosfair, Germany in collobaration with the agency.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the agency, Prof. Mohammad Haruna disclosed this at the unveiling of the stoves on Thursday in Abuja.
He said that the gesture would be extended to the benefitting women in the six geopolitical zones of the country under the agency’s corporate social responsibility.
“The gesture would also improve the agency’s eco-friendliness and carbon footprint, a positive contribution to climate change and service to humanity.
“Some of these stoves will be handed over to the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development for distribution to IDPs and flood victims.”
Haruna added that the use of energy-efficient cooking stoves provides high potential for emission reduction.
“The product of these stoves is also a viable, self sustaining and revenue generating venture which will create thousands of employment.
“We are duplicating manufacturing facility for both the stove and the briquettes from agricultural wastes.
“The products will be manufactured simultaneously at Kano and Agada village of Karu local government area of Nasarawa state.”
The Minister of Environment, Mr Mohammed Hassan said that the use of the stoves would reduce the usage of fuel wood and curb the attendant negative effects.
Represented by Mr Hassan Musa, the minister commended the NASENI for the laudable initiatives and foresight.
Also speaking, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disasters. and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq promised to collaborate with the agency to promote the stoves.
Represented by Dr Abubakar Sulaiman, Farouq said that the stoves would address some climate change issues like carbon emissions.
Katsina state governor, Aminu Masari, represented by the Commissioner for Environment, Usman Nadada promised to patronise the stove.
“Katsina state being in the fringes of the desert welcomes this development as one of the panaceas to desertification.”
Former Director- General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), Prof. Sani Sambo said the stoves would curb desertification and reduce fuelwood consumption by about 80 per cent.
Representative of Atmosfair, Germany, Dr Dietrich Brockhagen said the stove saves 80 per cent fuel wood and money.
Nigeria’s immediate past Ambassador to Jordan, Amb. Faruk Malami-Yabo commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his support for Nigeria’s climate change adaptation and deforestation efforts.
“Without his extraordinary leadership and zeal, this laudable project would not have been possible.
“The north is facing a lot of disasters relating to climate change like flood and desert encroachment.
“This stove is also a relief to women and it is a major relief to forests, especially in the north,” Malami-Yabo said.
A cross section of the beneficiaries commended the agency for the gesture and promised to use re stove judiciously.
