The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) has canvassed for establishment of legal department by the regulatory body to check activities of unregulated sinking of boreholes in Nigeria.
Mr Charles Alabo, the President of the society made the call on Tuesday, while speaking with newsmen during the week-long Annual International Conference organised by NMGS in Ilorin.
He advocated that the legal department be established under the umbrella of the recognised body.
According to him, people must not be allowed to do what they like in the country without sanctions.
He observed that it was risky to continue to allow proliferation of borehole drilling in Nigeria without proper regulations and sanctions on offenders.
Alabo noted that drilling of boreholes without proper regulation could weaken and puncture the concrete basement in the earth’s core.
He stressed that unless the Federa, State Governments and relevant authorities monitored and regulated borehole drillings, it might lead to sinkholes in the earth.
“It is dangerous and risky for governments in the country to allow unqualified persons to have unregulated access to water reservoirs on the ground,” he emphasised
He, however, urged government at all levels to provide improved water reservoirs across the country for improved water supply.
