A group, Ondo Redemption Front (ORF), has called on the National Assembly (NASS|) to intervene in the on-going impeachment process of Ondo state Deputy Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa by the state House of Assembly.
ORF, a group of professionals of Ondo descent, made the call on Monday in Akure at a media briefing addressed by its chairman, Ayodeji Ologun.
Ologun told newsmen that Nass intervention in the issue was necessary in the overriding interest of the people of the state and the country at large.
The state assembly on Wednesday commenced the process of removing Aiyedatiwa, over alleged gross misconduct.
The House had alleged that the embattled deputy governor was involved in some act of gross misconduct while in office as the acting governor.
Aiyedatiwa acted as governor while Governor Rotimi Akeredolu went abroad for medical treatment. He acted between June 13 and September 9 when the governor returned.
The group however contended that the real issue behind the impeachment process was not about allegation of accountability.
Ologun alleged that the impeachment process was “a vendetta by a class of crass opportunists with unfettered access to the state’s resources occasioned by the incapacity of the Governor”.
He urged the national assembly to invoke its power as stipulated in section 11(1)(4)(5) of the 1999 Constitution to call the state assembly to order.
“While we do not hold brief for Aiyedatiwa, we warn and sternly too, that the House should restrain itself from whims and caprices of those holding the state by the jugular,” he said.
