The Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Rumer, Ms Amina Momoh-Orimoloye has called for enhanced infrastructure investment to boost Nigeria’s livestock sector.
Ms Momoh-Orimoloye said this in an interview on Tuesday in Lagos.
Rumer is a digital livestock traceability and funding platform.
Momoh-Orimoloye stressed the need for an intentional investment in infrastructure for Nigeria’s livestock to thrive globally.
“It is essential for us to invest in much needed infrastructure in order for Nigeria to boost its livestock contribution to the national Gross Domestic Product.
“We need modernised and mechanised abattoirs, cold storage facilities, and most importantly transportation networks. These infrastructure will reduce post-harvest losses, post-production losses and increase shelf life of the produce.
“Also, enhancing the quality of livestock produce through better feeds, and veterinary services can increase our market value not just in the domestic market but especially within the global market space,” the expert said.
Momoh-Orimoloye said the new Livestock Ministry would facilitate access to international markets by ensuring compliance with global standards.
“This promotion is key and pertinent to our success in the livestock sector.
“Rumer is also committed to contributing to this growth and adopting best practices and innovative digital solutions to enhance productivity and access to international market spaces.
“We are currently excluded international market due to lack of compliance, quality assurance, traceability and a plethora of other different issues.
“There are a number of stable measures we can apply to enhance livestock value addition and that includes promoting the processing of livestock produce such as meat, dairy, leather, wool, bone marrows, bones and even blood during the slaughtering,” Momoh-Orimoloye said.
She called for the establishment of small to medium-sized processing units to create jobs and increase the value of livestock produce.
“Encouraging the produce of organic livestock produce can also attract premium prices, especially within the global market space.
“This is because grass-fed and organic animal produce are highly sought after, especially in this modern day era where people are becoming a lot more conscious about how their food is produced and under what condition.
“This can increase the value of our livestock produce both in the domestic and international markets,” she said.
Rumer is a pioneer blockchain-based supply platform, which is dedicated to transforming the agriculture sector in Nigeria and hoping to scale out across Africa.
The platform focuses on establishing traceability and providence (everything about livestock dating back to its birth).
The platform enables local and international livestock trading, expanding the market reach of Nigeria’s producers, and eliminating proximity to markets as a barrier to global market access.
