The National Examinations Council, NECO, has announced the indefinite postponement of the ongoing 2020 internal Secondary School Certificate Examinations, SSCE.
ASHENEWS recalls that the Council had earlier rescheduled some papers in the ongoing examination on the 21st of October.
In a statement by the Council’s Spokesperson, Azeez Sani and made available to ASHENEWS on Sunday, said the decision was taken to maintain the integrity and security of the Council’s examination procedures, as well as the current security challenges rising from the #EndSARS protests.
“The postponement is because some states have imposed curfew due to the protests which may cause some student to miss examinations and also affect the movement of the examination materials.
“The postponement has been approved by the Governing Board of the National Examinations Council at its Special Meeting held on Thursday to review the on-going 2020 SSCE (Internal) nationwide.
“It has been resolved that the 2020 SSCE (Internal) be postponed indefinitely given the current security challenges, occasioned by the ENDSARS protests, which disrupted the smooth conduct of the examinations in some parts of the country.
“In making this decision, the Board noted that due to these security challenges, some state governments imposed a curfew and closed schools to safeguard lives and property.
“In the circumstances, it has become difficult for the Council to move examination materials across the country while students in the affected locations were unable to sit for the papers already scheduled in the examination time table,” the statement reads.
The examination body stated that examinations would continue in all states when normalcy returned.
